KOLLAM: The Chief Investigating Officer of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) will conduct a probe into the allegation against the Kollam East Police Station with regard to the arrest of A. Ambikakumari, a housewife, under mistaken identity. The decision was taken by the SHRC Member, S. Varghese, when MS. Ambikakumari submitted a complaint during a sitting here on Friday. The police arrested her from her Railway Quarters residence here on the charge of being involved in a bogus cheque case. It so happened that the accused mentioned in the case was her namesake. Even though she pleaded with the police that she was innocent, they arrested her. The incident took place on November 24 last when her husband was away at work. Ms. Ambikakumari alleged that the police had forced her to confess to the crime. It was when the real accused moved the court for anticipatory bail that Ms. Ambikakumari's innocence was proved and she was released following intervention of the court. Two days later, the same court exonerated her. But the police have failed to give a genuine reason for arresting her. She has petitioned the SHRC to get justice. She plans to file a defamation case against the Sub-Inspector and policemen of the Kollam East Station.
