Panchayat to launch project for the poor

KOTTAYAM: The Kumarakom grama panchayat, which houses one of the most sought-after tourism destination in the country, has conceived a project to provide shelter to the residents of the area.

The project is being implemented with the help of the Kottayam district Cooperative Bank. As many as 146 families will be the beneficiaries of the project. These families, who now live in huts, will be provided with `pucca' houses under the project, the panchayat authorities said. To be selected as a beneficiary, one should own at least three cents of land within the grama panchayat boundary. Though the district Cooperative Bank will provide the beneficiaries a financial aid of Rs.30,000 each, the grama panchayat will repay the amount under the Kerala Development Plan.

The beneficiaries will have to repay the amount within five years. The credit will be given to the beneficiaries in three instalments.

The first instalment of Rs.9,000 will be given for constructing the basement, the second one comprising Rs.15,000 for the construction of walls and the third one consisting of Rs.6,000 for the roofing. The project will be launched at Kumarakom on May 5.
