KOLLAM: A coordinated movement is to be launched by environmentalists in the district to address various problems. The decision was taken at a meeting of environmentalists held here on Saturday.

The issues that are a cause for concern include granite quarries at Muttara Maruthi hillock, degradation of Sasthamcotta and Ashtamudi lakes and mineral sand-mining at Alapad.

The meeting was inaugurated by the chairman of the Maruthimala Samrakshana Samskarika Samithy, Thengamam Balakrishnan. The environmentalist Vallikavu Mohandas presided over the function.

A 25-member committee with Odanavattom Vijayaprakash as convener has been constituted for leading the movement.
