NEW DELHI: Modelled on the lines of India Habitat Centre, a "Poorva Sanskritik Kendra" at Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, on Sunday. The aesthetically designed Kendra has been constructed by the Delhi State Industrial Development Corporation Limited in consultation with the well-known architect Pradeep Sachdeva. Aimed as a socio-cultural hub for residents of the trans-Yamuna area, the Kendra has a 320-seat auditorium, art gallery, conference room, banquet hall and e-café, besides food court serving South Indian, Mughlai, Italian and Chinese cuisines at subsidised rates. It also boasts of a modern health club and a library stocked with 3, 000 books by leading authors. There are also facilities for playing billiards and practising yoga. During a media preview at the Kendra on Saturday, Delhi's Finance Minister A.K. Walia said: "The residents of the trans-Yamuna area were missing the facilities of a hub. It is not as big as the India Habitat Centre, but we have borrowed their expertise in designing it. Though we have outsourced the management of the Kendra, the Delhi Chief Secretary, S. Regunathan, will monitor the day-to-day activities of the Kendra. So far, 1,307 people have been enrolled as members." Dr. Walia informed that during his chairmanship of the Trans-Yamuna Development Board he saw to it that a savvy, cosmopolitan centre was constructed in East Delhi. There is also a proposal to link the adjoining Coffee House with the Kendra. Another interesting feature is that even non-members can avail of the facilities of the conference room.
