NEW DELHI: : Stressing the need for a more comprehensive approach to tackle the growing number of HIV/AIDS patients, especially women and children in the Capital, the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, on Saturday said the Government was ready to fight the stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.Speaking after inaugurating a Care Home for children affected by HIV/AIDS run by the Naz Foundation India Trust at East of Kailash here, the Chief Minister also agreed that any meaningful response to tackle the ailment had to bring together prevention, care and support. "We are extremely concerned about preventing new infections by spreading awareness on the ailment among marginal and vulnerable communities,'' she added.Escorted by the children, Ms. Dikshit visited every part of the new four-storey Care Home and said the Government was prepared to support all such innovative efforts by civil society organisations. Delhi has reported cases of 30,000 people living with HIV/AIDS and so far 236 people have died of AIDS, according to a statement made by the Health Minister, Yoganand Shastri, in the Assembly. The Director of Care Home of the Naz Foundation, Anjali Gopalan, also submitted an appeal to the Chief Minister and said: "HIV/AIDS is one of the most daunting challenges that contemporary society is facing, an issue that can tear the social fabric apart and most vitality, undermine many of the meaningful gains that this metropolis has made.''The appeal made to the Chief Minister has noted that there was a need to establish surveillance data collection on HIV/AIDS affected children in the Capital.
