NEW DELHI: : Three hundred and fifty years of history of Old Delhi were explored as the Heritage Society of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi organised a Heritage Walk of Shahjahanabad on Saturday.

The walk, which was held in collaboration with INTACH Delhi Chapter and Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation, started off from Shri Digambara Jain Lal Mandir and Bird Hospital in front of Red Fort and culminated at Jama Masjid.

On the way, the walk, which began at 8 a.m., passed through Gauri Shankar Temple, State Bank of India, Central Baptist Church, Gurdwara Sisganj, Sunehri Masjid, Paranthe Wali Gali, Nau Ghara, Katra Khushal Rai, Digambara jain Naya Mandir , Dharampura and Gali Gulian.

The Heritage Walk made people aware of the architectural heritage and living culture of Shahjahanabad and also guided them through the lanes and neighbourhoods pointing out places of historic and religious importance, intricately designed havelis, the town houses of the rich, and the various gateways and arches.

The event was an added bonus for a large number of tourists on a visit to Delhi as along with the MCD Commissioner, Rakesh Mehta, INTACH convener, O.P. Jain, senior diplomats and officials of MCD, DDA, Delhi Tourism and Archaeological Survey of India, they got an opportunity to not only visit various roads, lanes and bylanes of Shahjahanabad, but also gain an insight into their rich history.

The interaction amid the walkers, who also included prominent citizens, representatives of traders associations and resident welfare associations, also enlivened the memories of a vibrant city with its distinctive language and style.
