New Director-General of AFMS

NEW DELHI : Surgeon Vice-Admiral V.K. Singh will take over as Director-General of Armed Forces Medical Services on Sunday.

After passing MBBS from the Allahabad University in 1966, Mr. Singh was commissioned in the Indian Navy where he has served in various naval warships, besides undergoing specialised training in Cochlear Implant Surgery in the country and abroad.

More than 95 scientific papers written by him have been published in various national and international journals. He was awarded the CNS Commendation in 1971 for the humanitarian act of saving the life of a British officer on high seas.

Competition

NEW DELHI : A dance-cum-painting competition was organised at Hotel Grand Westend in Vikaspuri here over the weekend to create awareness on issues like child labour, environment, bonded labour, dowry system and drug addiction.

The competition - organised under the banner of the Pravasi Sangthan - was inaugurated by the former Member of Parliament, Rajkumari Ratna Singh, while the founder of Digamber Jain Mandir, M.K. Jain, presided over the function.

Addressing the gathering, Ms. Singh said such competitions help in developing the natural talents among children. The winners of the dance and painting competitions received gold, silver and bronze medals from Ms. Singh. The children also presented folk dances of various States.

Farewell parade

NEW DELHI : A ceremonial farewell parade was organised for K.J. Singh, who retired as the Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, at Tigri on Saturday.

Mr. Singh joined the Indian Police Service in 1969. He was a member of the Indian delegation to the Interpol Conference in Turkey in 1996 and was the officer in charge of the West Bengal CID team that investigated the Purulia arms-dropping case in its initial stages.

NASA contest NEW DELHI : A 13-member students' team from the Ryan International School at Rohini has bagged the first prize for its project "Kshitij" from the US-based NASA AMES Research Centre. The contest drew 109 entries from 586 students.

The school was also declared the first runners-up in the NASA Space Settlement Design Contest.
