Corporation to repatriate officials on deputation

Staff Correspondent

Violation of procedures alleged

MANGALORE: The Mangalore City Corporation on Saturday passed a resolution to send all officials on deputation to the corporation back to their parent organisations following alleged procedural lapses committed by them.

Taking serious note of the lapses said to have taken place in the past few months, the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party wanted the Mayor, Purandaradasa Kulur, to remove the officials from the corporation.

Citing an instance, the Leader of the Opposition, Shankar Bhat, said the Secretary of the corporation council and the Commissioner of the corporation had delayed the presentation of the budget by at least 15 days owing to which the council delayed approving the budget.

The councillors of the ruling party (Congress), including the former Mayor K. Diwakar, the Chief Whip of the ruling party, Mahabala Maarla, and senior councillors alleged that the officials on deputation have not been following the rules.

Mr. Bhat produced a letter allegedly sent to individuals, companies and organisations by the Special Land Acquisition Officer seeking Rs. 75,000 for the repair of the tennis court of a private club in Mangalore. The letterhead of the corporation was used, he said.

Noting that the two incidents prove that the officials on deputation do not follow procedures, Mr. Kulur said he will write to the officials' parent organisations and to the Government to take them back.

Row over land

BJP councillors took exception to the alleged move by Mr. Kulur to alienate a piece of land belonging to the corporation and hand it over to the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Mangalore division.

Mariyamma Thomas of the BJP, who represents the ward where the KSRTC bus stand is located, said the Mayor has no right to "give away" a piece of prime land "anticipating the permission" of the council.
