Assistance distributed

CHENNAI. The Young Women's Christian Association of Madras distributed Rs.3.75 lakhs to women of Kovalakuppam, a coastal fishing hamlet, for doing small business on Friday. Supriya Sahu, Joint Secretary of health and family welfare, N.Marichamy, General Manager of Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development for Women, and Cynthia Dulip Singh, president of YWCA, participated.

Award

The Mylapore Academy has invited producers of Tamil stage plays and TV serials to submit their productions made during 2004 for BESTS 2004 Awards. Applications should be in writing.

Yoga programme

Avathara Utsavam

The Avathara Utsavam of Sri Ramanujar will be held at Sriperumbudur from May 2 to 12. The Thirumandiram festival will be held on May 10, the car festival will be held on May 11 and `Sathumarai' on May 12.

Brahmotsavam

The Brahmotsavam of Veetrirundha Perumal temple at Thirumazhisai, will be held from May 1 to 11.

Huts destroyed

About 200 huts were destroyed in a fire that broke out in Ambedkar Colony, Ashok Nagar, in the early hours on Saturday.

According to Fire and Rescue Service personnel, 13 fire tenders and 15 Metrowater tankers were pressed into service and the flames were brought under control in about two hours. No one was injured in the accident. The cause of the fire is under investigation, officers added.

Later in the day, the Rural Industries Minister, B.Valarmathi, N.Balaganga, Chairman, Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board and R.Thyagarajan, Deputy Mayor, visited the Colony..The Corporation officials have been asked to provide temporary accommodation, food, and medical facilities for the affected.
