Hospital launches paediatric pulmonology wing

Staff Reporter

It is a forerunner to neonatology intensive care unit

CHENNAI: Dr. Mehta's Hospitals at Chepet has launched a paediatric pulmonology wing as a forerunner to setting up paediatric sub-speciality units for neonatology intensive care, gastroenterology, neurology, neurosurgery, haemetology and cardiology.

The 150-bed hospital plans to introduce outreach programmes, under which its specialists render neonatal and paediatric care in villages in and around Chennai, Dilip Mehta, executive director of the hospital, told a press conference on Friday. Satellite centres to provide medical and surgical care was also proposed. A pulmonology team, recognised by the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, was involved in propagating and sensitising paediatricians to recent concepts in pulmonary medicine.

Asthma education

The hospital organised an asthma education programme on Friday ahead of World Asthma Day on May 3. Asthma continued to be a grossly underdiagnosed and undertreated disorder, V.V. Varadarajan said. Children had disturbed sleep and lost schooldays because parents were unwilling to accept diagnosis of asthma.

S. Vasanth Kumar stressed the importance of a therapy continuum with inhalers (aerosol therapy), which formed the bedrock of preventive treatment. Pulmonologists projected the prevalence of asthma in Chennai as between 10 and 12 per cent among children and between 15 to 20 per cent among adults.
