CHENNAI: S.P. Thyagarajan, Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras, said on Saturday that the university funds were being managed in a transparent way. Members of the media and the public were welcome to inspect the accounts, he said. He was responding to allegations of misuse of funds and transfer of endowments. "Programmes are being monitored by experts groups from funding agencies," he said. The University Grants Commission (UGC) inspected the use of its funds twice a year. One of the five universities chosen by the UGC under the `Potential for Excellence' programme, the University of Madras was the only one to have received the third instalment of the grant from the UGC, he said. The university submitted proposals worth Rs. 57 crores to the Union Planning Commission and proposals worth Rs 50 crores to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD). The Planning Commission sanctioned Rs. 30 crores for the university. The HRD Ministry also sanctioned funds worth Rs. 25 crores. "Tele-education is our first priority," said Dr. Thyagarajan. The university needs infrastructure and facilities to make remote teaching and learning possible. The university sought Rs. 17 crores from the State Government for a nanotechnology centre. "Science campuses at Guindy and Taramani are already pursuing research in this area. However, we want to make this centre a focussed area for research." On a recent visit to New Delhi to sign a memorandum of understanding with the universities of Mumbai and Calcutta, he presented the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, with an updated document on the Senate House renovation project, requesting him to inaugurate the building in February 2006.
Job-oriented diplomas
The university would launch a number of new programmes in the new academic year, including an add-on employment-oriented diploma programme under which a postgraduate student can get a diploma while studying for his masters degree.
