CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday directed the release of financial assistance from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund to girls who had been sexually assaulted by an officer of the Customs Department. The man has been detained under the Goondas Act. Each of the three girls S. Anandhi (15) of Udhayendram village, Venda alias Vendamani (14) of Natchiarkuppam village and S. Prema alias Kirupa (12) in Vellore district would be given Rs. 1 lakh, an official release said. The girls, who were from poor families, were housed in the government children's home at Kellys. The Government decided to provide financial assistance to these girls to enable them to come out of the trauma. The interest drawn against the amount to be deposited in their name would be used to meet their needs, including educational expenses. The amount would be given to them when they turned 18 for taking up self-employment ventures or further education. The Chief Minister directed that the three children should be allowed to stay at the children's home.
