Sharp showers

TIRUCHI: The city and its suburban areas experienced moderate to sharp showers tonight bringing respite to the residents who were reeling under the sweltering heat for the past few days. Accompanied by lighting and strong winds, the sudden downpour lashed the city for about an hour. The sharp showers led to intermittent power trips in some areas.

Theft bid

An unknown person entered into a Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) liquor shop on Allithurai road at Somarasampettai on Thursday night and attempted to commit theft, the police here said. The matter was reported to the police on Friday.

Based on a complaint from the shop supervisor, the police have registered a case.

Held with gelatin

A 28-year-old man was arrested on a charge of possessing gelatin sticks near Thiruverambur on Friday.

The police here said the Sub-Inspector of Thiruverambur was conducting a vehicle check on Alathur bridge when he found Sebastin possessing two gelatin sticks illegally. The accused was held and a case registered.

Pirated CDs seized

Two persons, who had pirated compact discs of Tamil films, were arrested at Thathaiyangarpet on Friday. Three CDs of latest films — `Chandramuki' and `Sukkiran' were seized from Sivakumar and Senthil Kumar.

Coaching classes

The UGC coaching centre of the Jamal Mohammed College, here, will conduct coaching classes for the UGC - NET examinations from May 16. Coaching will be given to candidates belonging to the branches of Humanities, Arts, Computer Science and Environmental Sciences. Interested candidates interested to join the course can contact the Principal, according to a release from the College.

Mettur level

The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 52.84 feet today. The inflow was 395 cusecs and the discharge 800 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
