COIMBATORE: The Transport Department on Friday conducted a dawn-to-dusk drive against omni bus operators.. Checks were conducted in ten places in Coimbatore circle (comprising Coimbatore, Erode and the Niligiris Districts), said the Deputy Transport Commissioner, K. Yogarajan. Thirty-one motor vehicle Inspectors and nine RTOs were involved . In Coimbatore, checks were organised on Pollachi Road at Eachanari, Karumbukkadai checkpost near Aatuppalam, at Ramanathapuram junction and Walayar on the NH 47. This followed complaints about plying of two buses using the same registration number and use of sticker number plates in violation of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules. Motor vehicle inspectors and flying squads were deployed to look into complaints of omni bus operators affixing one or two sticker sheets on number plates and peeling them off for changing the numbers, he said. They found that 479 omni buses violated permit conditions and evaded tax. A sum of Rs 1.06 lakhs was realised. .
