6.30 lakh houses by May 30

Eight lakh houses set as target for 2005-06

HYDERABAD: The Rural Development Minister, D. Srinivas, has said that construction of 6.30 lakh weaker section houses taken up during 2004-05 would be completed by May 30.

Briefing reporters after the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, held video conference with district Collectors and senior officials on the progress of the ongoing Praja Patham and Rythu Chaitanya yatra here on Saturday, Mr. Srinivas said construction of 6.30 lakh houses every year would be the yardstick set for the Housing Corporation. He said the Government has fixed eight lakh houses as the target for 2005-06, which included the Rajiv Gruhakalpa houses also.

Officials had visited 15,611 villages and hamlets out of 21,908 during the last 20 days and redressed 5,481 grievances out of 10,286 pertaining to drinking water and wage employment. He said the chaitanya yatra would benefit the farmers before the commencement of kharif season.

Mr. Srinivas said that on May 14, asset distribution and other welfare programmes would be taken up at the district-level celebrations to mark the completion of one-year of the Congress Government.

Earlier, the Chief Minister during interaction with the officials told them to take precautions to avoid small lapses in land acquisition, which could delay the construction of the irrigation projects.

The Chief Minister said he would not tolerate delay in construction of the weaker section houses. He expressed his dissatisfaction at the delay in identification of the beneficiaries of the houses for the tsunami hit farmers.

He made it clear that machines should be not be used for wage employment programme. Complaints from any party pertaining to drinking water, electricity and employment assurance programme should be redressed immediately.

Referring to the chaitanya yatra he said that farmers should be enlightened to grow crops where the risk of loss was minimal.
