This is a roadblock, literally

The stretch on the Bowenpally-Trimulgherry road is a motorist's nightmare

HYDERABAD: The road from Bowenpally to Trimulgherry is a vital link between the two areas. But, in the last couple of years, it has been dysfunctional due to the unfinished road over a culvert.

Except cyclists, who can lift their vehicle across, no other vehicle can cross the culvert. With no signposts or lighting in the area, the gaping holes, protruding iron girders, sand and gravel make it a potential danger zone. It's a miracle that there has been no accident in the area though construction activity has ceased several months ago.

Motorists take a detour around residential colonies abutting the road to reach the other side, while RTC buses and lorries proceeding to the Bowenpally market with vegetables are being forced to chart alternative routes.

Complicated issue

Sometime ago, the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) sought to widen the culvert because of traffic congestion at that point. Realising the urgency of the situation, it had even prepared tender documents even while official permission was awaited from higher defence authorities.

Finally, when the contract estimated at Rs. 14.5 lakhs was given to a private contractor, he simply vanished, flummoxing SCB authorities. Later, he commenced the work but left it midway as he bagged big contracts elsewhere.

"Why can't the SCB cancel the contract and take it up on its own?" is the question posed by residents.

"It has been a complicated issue as a new contractor might want to do the job all over again as there are aspects like structural stability.

We are in the process of either taking it up ourselves or calling for a separate tender," says an SCB official.
