Peroorkada market gets a facelift

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: One of the oldest markets in the city at Peroorkada has received a major facelift with the City Corporation completing the first phase of a project to set up a modern commercial complex and shopping centre.

There are two blocks housing the commercial centre and comfort stations. The Rs.1.65 crore project was taken up by the Corporation in 1999 under the People's Plan Campaign. The project also includes a vegetable market and fish market.

The commercial block includes 20 shops on the ground floor and office space spread over three upper floors. The parking lot can accommodate 50 vehicles. The pay- and- use comfort stations will function round- the- clock. The Peroorkada evening market was a major trading centre for farm produce brought from the suburban areas of Kallayam, Vattapara and Nedumangad. Old timers recall that vendors used to walk all the way to the open market bearing baskets of fresh vegetables, tubers and poultry products on their heads.
