THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The District and Sessions Judge, Y. Thajudeen Koya, has sentenced two persons to rigorous imprisonment for attempting to circulate fake currency notes in the city in 1996. The prosecution case was that Shibu, a resident of Kadakampalli near All Saints College, was arrested by the police after he attempted to palm off a fake note of Rs. 100 denomination to a fish vendor near the Medical College Junction. The police later recovered nine counterfeit notes from a hotel in Ulloor where Shibu was staying. The police had also recovered 244 fake notes of Rs. 100 denomination from a shop engaged in gold plating works in Ulloor on the same day and arrested the shop owner, Sajan, a resident of Cheruvakkal in Ulloor. While Shibu has to undergo imprisonment for four years, Sajan has been sentenced to three years. The court directed both the persons to pay Rs 5,000 as fine, failing which the duo will have to undergo another six months in prison. The Public Prosecutor, R.
