DPI warning to schools

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government has decided to take stringent action, including cancellation of recognition, against the primary schools that conduct vacation classes for students. The Director of Public Instruction, has issued an order prohibiting such classes. Even though there already is an order to this effect, many of the schools, mostly in the unaided sector have been found to violate this. The vacation period is to be utilised only for nurturing the talents of students and not to burden them further with academic lessons.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Principal of Medical College, G. Sujathan, who retired on Saturday after long years as a teacher, was honoured at a meeting called by the Medical College area committee of Kerala Gazetted Officers' Association. — Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A workshop on communication and attitudes was organised for the frontline staff of Railways on Saturday. Run over by train

Thiruvananthapuram: A 56-year-old man was found run over by train on the railway tracks at Vakkom railway station in the early hours on Saturday. He has been identified as Sathyaseelan of Vakkom. The body has been kept in the mortuary of Medical College hospital.— Staff Reporter

Found hanging

Thiruvananthapuram: A 27-year-old youth was found dead hanging at his house in Thozhickal in Kovalam police station limits on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Biju. The police suspect Biju to have committed suicide. — Staff Reporter

MLA hospitalised

Thiruvananthapuram: The Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Mala constituency, T. V. Radhakrishnan, was today admitted to the Medical College Hospital (MCH). Hospital authorities said his condition was stable. The MLA was admitted at around 12.10 p.m. — Staff Reporter

Student injured

Thiruvananthapuram: A 20-year-old engineering college student was injured when she was hit by a police jeep at Ayurveda College junction on Saturday. The injured person was identified was Aparna. She has been admitted to the Medical College Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Power supply

to be disrupted

KOCHI: Power supply to areas on the western side of Pallimukku such as Old Thevara Road and Churchlanding Junction will be disrupted between 9.30 a. m. and 5.30 p. m. on Sunday owing to repair work on the supply lines.

Takes charge

KOCHI: N.D. Enasu has assumed charge as Pro Vice-Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology. Dr. Enasu was head of the Department of Zoology, Christ College, Irinjalakuda.

Industries' plea

KOCHI: The Edayar Small Scale Industries Association has urged the State Pollution Control Board and Local Area Environment Committee to provide time and technical assistance for industrial units to initiate steps to check pollution. The association secretary, M.N. Ravindran, said in a communication that the Government should provide financial assistance to sick industrial units in the area for installing technology to controlling pollution. Protest

KOCHI: Vypin Kudivella Samara Samithy will lay siege to the city on Monday demanding steps to solve acute drinking water scarcity in the island. The protest will begin from High Court jetty at 9 a.m.

Decision hailed

KOCHI: Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry has welcomed the decision of the Commissioner of Commercial Taxes to extend time for registration under Valued-Added Tax regime till May 15. The Chamber had earlier requested the authorities to extend the time limit for registration from April 30.
