Vijayawada

OVERFLOWING: Old and rusted underground pipelines result in frequent leakages in some areas of the 40th division in Vijayawada Photo: Ch. Vijaya Bhaskar.
VIJAYAWADA: Unlike many other divisions of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), this division is relatively problem free. The 40th division in the heart of the city's commercial hub has its locational advantage in that it has a good road network and street-lighting facilities and residents have very few things to complain of. The absence of any major slum in this relatively small division with a population of about 15,000 is another advantage, as the authorities concerned do not face any problems on that count. However, a few problems have started cropping up of late. The onset of summer and the subsequent shortfall in the supply of drinking water is posing a serious problem to the residents. Though the area gets water supply twice a day, the pressure in the taps has come down significantly and thereby, a decrease in the quantum of water. "We took the matter to the notice of the authorities concerned and asked them to increase the pressure to ensure that we get sufficient water. We are awaiting a response from them," the residents say.
Overflowing drains
Drinking water shortage apart, residents in some of the posh localities in the division abutting the Bandar Road also have complaints about the sewerage lines, which get blocked frequently leading to overflowing of drains. The leakage of sewer water from the pipes and the stagnant overflowing water from the drains often raises stink resulting in inconvenience to residents. A major portion of the decades-old pipelines had already been changed, but there are still some pockets where the replacement was yet to be done. The division, otherwise, has a good road network, majority of the roads including the by-lanes converted into cement concrete roads, effective sanitation facilities and garbage dumpers placed at all important points.
