Awards for drivers with accident-free record

Staff Correspondent

BELGAUM: The Minister for Agriculture Marketing and in charge of the district, Prakash B. Hukkeri, has asked the State transport corporations to develop a competitive attitude to tackle the challenge from the private bus operators.

He was addressing the employees of the Belgaum division of North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) after presenting silver medals to 44 drivers with an accident-free record in 2002 and 2003 here on Sunday. The Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Council Sachidand Khot; MLAs Jagdish Metgud and Ramesh Kudachi; and the NWKRTC Managing Director, Munish Moudgil, were present.

Mr. Hukkeri said the Government is trying to improve the financial status of the State road transport corporations. He suggested that rewards be given to those who bring in the highest revenue and safe driving be recognised. He promised to get the Rs. 1.10 crores sanctioned from the Government to set up a depot in Autonagar on the outskirts of the city.

T.A. Krishna Swamy, NWKRTC Divisional Controller, Belgaum, drew the attention of the Minister towards the financial crisis faced by transport corporations after the Government privatised a few routes.
