HYDERABAD: Every blue collar worker's family covered under the Andhra Pradesh Labour Welfare Board will be entitled to a "marriage gift" of Rs. 5, 000 for the wedding of one daughter in future. The ceiling of Rs. 75, 000 for super speciality treatment for ESI cases has been raised to Rs. 1 lakh with immediate effect. A `Janasri Beema' for rickshaw-pullers and autorickshaw drivers will come into effect soon to help unorganised private transport sector workers. These were among the slew of welfare measures announced for workers by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, at the May Day celebrations here on Sunday. Dr. Reddy assured workers that his Government would not pursue anti-worker policies. Categorically ruling out privatisation of APSRTC "as long as the Congress Government is in power," he said it would only be braced up to face challenges from competitive private bus operators. However, workers should keep in mind that the days of absolute monopoly were over and a true professional approach towards work was needed to beat competition. He said RTC workers must also realise their responsibility and dedicate themselves to work.
Manpower cell
Announcing several measures aimed at benefiting the working classes, Dr. Reddy said an overseas manpower cell would be set up to assist and guide job seekers from the State. Five ITIs Cuddapah, Patancheru, Warangal, Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam would be modernised at a cost of Rs. 8 crores to develop precision skills among students, he said. The ESI scheme would be extended to Nalgonda, Suryapet, Ganapavaram, Karimnagar and Anaparthi to provide social security benefits to workers of those areas, he said. Listing other achievements of his Government like revival of seven defunct statutory and non-statutory tripartite boards and committees to improve the consultation process on labour issues, he said these measures reflected the Government's commitment to the welfare of workers. The Minister for Labour, G. Vinod, and the Minister for Transport, S. Santosh Reddy, were present.
