Erode
Staff Reporter
ERODE: The Tamil Nadu Green Movement will conduct a massive rally from Erode to Kalingarayanpalayam on May 6, opposing the supply Cauvery water to Tirupur. The State president of the Movement, V. Jeevanandham, said that at present, Erode and its neighbouring municipal and panchayat areas were getting Cauvery water for drinking purposes. In Erode alone, more than 2 crore litres of water was being supplied daily to the residents. But now, by spending Rs. 1,200 crores, a massive scheme had been completed to provide drinking water to Tirupur from river Cauvery. Under the scheme, water would be pumped from the Cauvery near Kalingarayanpalayam to three overhead tanks constructed in three different places. As Tirupur was located 400 feet above Cauvery river, pumping of water straight to Tirupur was a problem.
Regular supply
from May 6
Mr. Jeevanandham said that if 30 crore litres of water was drawn daily from the Cauvery and supplied to Tirupur, water supply to the residents of Erode and nearby municipalities would certainly be severly affected. He said already a trial supply was made some months ago and from May 6, regular water supply to Tirupur would begin. The Green Movement had already voiced its protest to supply Cauvery water to Tirupur. On May 6, a mammoth peace rally would be conducted in which freedom fighters, members from various organisations, farmers' representatives and the public would take part.
Demonstration
The proposed rally would start from Brough Road near the Municipal Office Gandhi statue and reach Kalingarayanapalayam on the same day by covering 12 km. The participants would stage a demonstration there, Mr. Jeevanandham said.
