SALEM: The State Transport officials began a cracked down on omni buses belonging to Tamil Nadu and other States that are plying in the State for various offences. A sum of Rs. 2.90 lakhs was collected towards fines and taxes in the intense raids carried out against these omni buses and other heavy vehicles in the regions of Salem, Dharmapuri, Namakkal and Tiruchengode. A spokesperson in the Transport Department said that the Salem Regional Deputy Transport Commissioner, Sivalingam, and officials from the Regional Transport Offices, conducted simultaneous raids. A total of 345 omni buses of Tamil Nadu and other states were examined and six were found to have evaded the payment of road taxes. Four others contained more number of passenger seats than the prescribed capacity.
