GULBARGA: Members of the Association of the Karnataka State Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Daily Wage Employees working in government and semi-government departments have threatened to revive their indefinite hunger fast and other agitation from May 8 if the State Government does not regularise the services of 17,000 daily wagers immediately. Announcing this at a press conference here on Sunday, the honorary president of the association, Chandrashekar Hiremath, who is also the general secretary of the Kisan and Mazdoor Cell of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, said a decision to this effect was taken at the general body meeting of the association held here on Saturday. He said that based on an assurance by the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, who called on the daily wagers who were on an indefinite fast in March, the members withdrew the threat to immolate themselves and ended their indefinite fast. He said that according to the assurance given by the Chief Minister, a high-level meeting of officials was convened in Bangalore on April 7 in which the Chief Secretary, K.K. Misra, and Mr. Singh participated. In the meeting, the association leaders explained the case of the daily wagers and provided details sought by the officials present, Mr. Hiremath said. Mr. Hiremath said he later called on Mr. Misra and provided him additional information. The Chief Minister, after hearing the pleas of the association, directed the Chief Secretary to put up a proposal in the Cabinet meeting for the regularisation of services of the 17,000 daily wagers, Mr. Hiremath said. He alleged that the officials failed to place the proposals for regularisation of the services in the two Cabinet meetings held on April 23 and 26.
