Jugraj's hat-trick goes in vain

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: Gurusev Singh's three drag-flick goals off penalty corners, coupled with a spectacular solo field effort from Shivender Singh enabled Western India stun former champion Punjab Police 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the Bombay Gold Cup hockey tournament on Sunday.

The Mumbai Super League leader will now meet the winner of the Uttar Pradesh XI versus Punjab XI (Lahore) in the semifinal.

Western's decisive win overshadowed a hat-trick by international Jugraj Singh, whose powerful drag-flicks fetched him all three goals for Punjab Police.

However, he managed to end up on the losing side after notching up the first hat-trick of the tournament that is held at the Mahindra stadium.

The results (quarterfinals): Western Railway 4 (Gursev Singh 3, Shivender Singh) bt Punjab Police 3 (Jugraj Singh 3 hat-trick); Punjab & Sind Bank 4 (Baljit Singh Chandi, Vikramjit Singh, Baljit Singh Saini, Sharanjit Singh) bt South Central Railway 1 (S. Dung Dung).
