Indian paddlers stumble

SHANGHAI: Indian paddlers had a disastrous day in the office in the 48th world table tennis championship here on Sunday as they lost in the first round.

Commonwealth champion Achanta Sharath Kamal, who qualified for the main draw, went down to top seed Wang Liqin of China 8-11, 8-11, 5-11, 11-9, 8-11 while the women's pair of Kasturi Chakraborty and Nandita Saha and Mamta Prabhu and Visakha Vijay lost to higher ranked opponents in the first round of doubles.

The Chakraborty-Saha combine lost to German pair of Tanja Hain-Hofmann and Elke Wosik 7-11, 5-11, 6-11, 11-9, 6-11, while Prabhu and Visakha were shown the door by Nicoletta Stefanova and Wenling Tan Monfardini of Italy 12-5, 11-6, 12-10, 11-6.

With the top two players — National champion Poulumi Ghatak and Mouma Das — opting out of the championship, Visakha and Saha will now carry India's hopes in the women's singles on Monday. India also has four entries in mixed doubles which will also begin on Monday. — PTI
