Campaign to boycott Cola products begins

PALAKKAD: The campaign to boycott Cola products in the district from May 15 began at the Perumatty grama panchayat where the Coca-Cola bottling unit is located, on Sunday. The campaign, launched at Vandithavalam town in Chittur, was led by Perumatty panchayat president A. Krishnnan. All the panchayat members along with the Anti-Coca Cola Campaign Committee leaders Mylamma, Vilayodi Venugopal, Velur Swaminathan and others took part in the campaign. The campaign in other panchayats of the district will be launched on May 5. The panchayat president said traders had promised not to sell Cola products from May 15. Meanwhile, the Janata Dal secretary general, K. Krishnankutty, said a defence committee to conduct the case against the Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Ltd. in the Supreme Court would be formed at a meeting at Perumatty panchayat office on May 20. — Staff Reporter

Rabid cow dead

KOLLAM: The rabid cow that was in a terminal stage for the past two days at Umayanallur on the outskirts of Kollam city died on Sunday. The cow died shortly before a team of veterinary surgeons arrived there to kill it. A pregnant heifer, the cow had created panic in the area, mainly because it was among a herd of milking cows. It is suspected to have contracted rabies from a dog that had bit several livestock in the area. As rabies in a mature stage has no treatment, veterinary surgeon B. Ajit Babu, who examined the animal on Friday, had given the opinion that killing the animal was the best option for its owner. — Staff Reporter

Rise in SBT CD ratio

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The credit-deposit (CD) ratio of the State Bank of Travancore (SBT) for the State of Kerala has recorded an increase of 5.79 per cent during 2004-05. The CD ratio of the bank for the State went up from the level of 50.88 per cent at the start of the year to 56.67 per cent at the end of the year, the SBT said in a statement. The credit deployment along with the investments the bank had made in the State in Government approved securities and bonds too increased substantially, when considered as a percentage of the deposits held by it in its branches in the State. This went up from 55.49 per cent to 60.58 per cent during the year. The bank's CD ratio for its entire network of branches spread across the country was 60.34 per cent on March 31, 2004. It went up to 62.88 per cent on March 31, 2005. — Special Correspondent

Debate

KOLLAM: Vimochana, the socio-cultural group for radical thought and action, is organising a debate here on Monday on the topic `Globalisation, Value Added Tax and the Society.' Those who are participating in the debate are S. Ramalingam from the Tax Study Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, Koshy P. Mathew from the Economics Department, Kerala University and the president of the Quilon Merchant's Chamber, K. Ramabhadran. The programme will be held at the Public Library Hall at 3.30 p.m.

Killed in accident

THRISSUR: A 19-year-old person was killed when the motorcycle he was travelling in collided with a car at Panambilli College Junction near Chalakkudy on Sunday afternoon. The police gave the name of the victim as Panikkaveettil Nazeeb of Vijaya Lane at Ayyanthole. The car sped away after the accident, the police said.

Religious event

PALAKKAD: The Mahakumbhabhishekam of Lord Thiruvenkattappan and Lord Dharma Sastha temples of Vadakkanthara village will be held on May 19 and 20.

These ancient temples, believed to be consecrated by sage Rishya Sringa, are renovated and given a facelift for the Mahakumbhabhishekam. Tantri Animangalam Subramanian Namboodiri will conduct the ritual. — Staff Reporter
