Junior doctors' plea for health panel

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors' Association has demanded setting up of a commission to review health conditions and the need for more medical colleges in the State.

It sought cancellation of the GOs 22 and 58 as they `violate' the Jeevan Reddy Committee report.

In a representation to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the president of the association, B.R. Suresh Babu, expressed distress at the Government's decision to permit more private medical colleges "without following any rules and guidelines." - Staff Reporter

KURNOOL: Six naxalites of the CPI (Maoist) surrendered before the Superintendent of police, B. Malla Reddy, here on Sunday. They were Cheruku Venkateswarlu alias Lingaswamy of M. Lingapuram in Kothapalli mandal, Eeswaraiah alias Prabhakar, Gollaravi alias Lingaswamy of Vadlaramapuram, Y. Dharamaraju alias Kishore, Prasanna Kumar of Vempenta village and B. APCC chief call for help to ryots

HYDERABAD: The APCC president, K. Keshava Rao, on Sunday expressed grief at the deaths caused by heavy gales and lightning lashing several districts for the last 10 days. Dr. Rao urged the Government to help farmers who lost their crop. HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Government Contract Employees' Federation has alleged that the Government was preparing the ground to remove from service 773 doctors who have been working as civil assistant surgeons since last four years.

HYDERABAD: The executive committee of the Andhra Pradesh Panchayat Raj Services Association has demanded immediate filling of vacant posts of extension officers from feeder categories.

T.M.B. Butchiraju, secretary-general, in a statement here on Sunday said the committee adopted resolutions on several demands. The meeting, chaired by S.D. Munavar, co-chairman, sought regularisation of services of part-time employees. - Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: Unable to overcome the debt trap due to losses suffered, a handloom worker of Sivarama Nagar in Dharmavaram town, L. Gangadhar (33), allegedly committed suicide in his house on Sunday by hanging himself. - Staff Reporter

Urdu conference

HYDERABAD: An All-India Urdu conference and national conference of Minorities on Prime Minister's 15-point programme will be held here on July 29 and 30.

The conference, among other issues, will discuss the role of Urdu in the 21st century, problems of Urdu language, Government policies towards its development and preservation, including literature and culture.

Attack on official

condemned

ADILABAD: The Adilabad Municipal employees will stage a black badge protest on Monday to condemn the attack on the Bellampalli Municipal Commissioner, R. Rambabu, and Sanitary Inspector, Maheshwar Reddy, on Friday.

In a press release here on Sunday, the Adilabad Municipal Employees Association president, G. Srinivas, and general secretary, S. Jairaj, condemned the attack on the officials.-Staff Reporter

Woman held

NALGONDA: The Huzurnagar police on Sunday arrested a woman, Uppala Vijayalaxmi, on the charge of running a brothel and roping in innocent girls into the flesh trade.

According to the police sources, she contacts customers on their mobiles and sends girls, drawn from Miryalaguda, Garidepally and Jaggaiahpet, to their places. To the surprise of police, a 14-year-old girl confessed to the police that Vijayalaxmi had been exploiting her for the last one year.

The police also booked cases against three prostitutes and six men.

Struck by lightning

NALGONDA: An agricultural labourer, Venkataiah (31), of Chilakamarri in Pedda Adisarlapally mandal died after being hit by a thunderbolt on Sunday. Another person, Chandraiah, sustained injuries.

According to the information reaching here, the thunderbolt hit the duo when they stood beneath a tree to save themselves from heavy winds. While Venkataiah died on the spot, Chandraiah's leg was completely burnt.

They were on the way to their home when the lightning struck.

Case booked against constable

NALGONDA: The police on Sunday booked a case against a constable, Shakru Naik, on the charge of assaulting the Assistant Sub-Inspector, Ch.Satyanarayana, in Chintapally police station on Saturday night.

According to the police sources, the constable nursed a grouse against the ASI for sending him to Devarakonda for medical tests. He was accused of consuming liquor while on duty.

Mr.Naik attacked the ASI with a stick and the latter sustained minor injuries, sources said. The district police kept the incident under wraps till the Sunday evening.

Confirming the incident, the ASP, Ravinder, said that a case under the section 324 of IPC was booked against the constable. - Staff Reporter

Two die in road mishap

KURNOOL: Two persons died and four others were injured when an ambassador car hit a tree near Sirivelmetta on the National Highway 18 in Kurnool district on Sunday.

Free rice for drought pensioners

ANANTAPUR: The State Government has sanctioned free supply of 10 kg of rice each to the drought pensioners in the district from April 2005 to June 2005.

According to the DRO, M. Sudarshan Reddy, there are 60,662 drought pensioners in the district. They can avail the benefit extended by the government.-Staff Reporter

Sports kits to SC hostels

ANANTAPUR: The Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) has sanctioned 86 kits of sports material to the SC hostels and institutions in the district.

According to the District Sports Development Officer, C.L.N. Reddy, there are 13 residential institutions, 22 girls hostels and 51 boys hostels for SCs in the district. -Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH: The Helen Keller's Training College for the Deaf has invited applications from special teachers of deaf and dumb students for admission into Diploma in Special Education (Hearing Impaired) by May 31.

Its principal-cum-coordinator, P. Dowlat Khan, said OC and BC candidates must have secured 45 per cent marks in Intermediate and SC/ST candidates must have got 40 per cent marks. Candidates passing degree should have got 42 per cent marks in Intermediate, he said. Applications could be obtained by sending a demand draft of Rs. 100, by enclosing a self-addressed envelope with Rs. 10 stamps.-Staff Reporter

Cleaners killed

in accident

CUDDAPAH: Cleaners of two lorries died and the driver of another lorry was injured in an accident involving three lorries before a Dargah near Mantapampalle in the early hours of Sunday.

The driver of a stationary lorry was hurt when a speeding lorry bound for Cuddapah hit it from behind and the cleaner of the latter vehicle, Khaleel Basha (30), of Jammalamadugu, died.
