SATHUPALLI (KHAMMAM DT.): The identification of a more dependable location for the construction of the phase-I of the Rajiv Sagar project proposed on Godavari river was emphasised by the legislators from three districts -- Khammam, Krishna and West Godavari -- who met here on Sunday. They all preferred drawl of water from Rudrammakota point to make the lift scheme more viable with modest investment. They all resolved to mobilise public opinion for a change in the design of the first phase so as to de-link it with the lift scheme proposed at Dummugudem. Making it clear that the scheme would not affect the projects downstream, they wanted to make a representation to the Chief Minister for an engineering review of the proposal as well as its final acceptance. If necessary, the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, would be approached for funds from the Centre, they stated.
Solace to tail-end ryots
The Minister for Municipal Administration, Koneru Ranga Rao, said that the Rudramkota location would make the lift scheme useful and it would give solace to the problems of the tail-end farmers under the Nagarjunasagar left canal system. He said the project could be achieved with a collective effort. Chanumolu Venkata Rao, Mylavaram MLA, said the project would be the best option for quenching the thirst of the people in the upland areas in Khammam, Krishna and West Godavari districts. Assuring his support for getting the project implemented, he said technical feasibility of the scheme should be studied more thoroughly. Jalagam Venkata Rao, MLA of Sathupalli, who took initiative in conducting a private survey on the feasibility of the scheme, explained that the phase-I of the Rajiv Sagar was proposed as part of the Dummugudemn lift scheme.
