COIMBATORE: Within seven hours of the death of a kalasi worker Sikkuraj and hospitalisation of two others, the City Police arrested a tailor, Anthony and a sweeper at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, Ganesan, on charges of selling surgical spirit. On Saturday night, Anthony was said to have bought two bottles of surgical spirit for Rs. 20 from Ganesan and given it to three kalasi workers Sikkuraj, Amalanathan and Selvam alias Muttaikan Selvam. On consuming, the trio reported some uneasiness and irritation. While Sikkuraj died even before shifting him to a hospital, the two others were rushed to the hospital. They responded to the treatment and are said to be out of danger. The City Police Commissioner, Karan Singha, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), P. Nagarajan, constituted special teams comprising Assistant Commissioner's of Police from the Law and Order and Prohibition Enforcement Wing, who nabbed Anthony and based on his confession, also Ganesan. The police have requested the CMCH authorities to tighten and monitor the procurement and consumption of spirit bottles in the hospital. The police have registered cases against the two persons on charges of selling poisonous substance under the provisions of 4 (1) (A) of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act and under section 5 of the same act for sale of de-natured spirit for inebriation. A case under section 304 of IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder - selling a poisonous substance with knowledge but without any intention to kill) has also been registered. The Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) has cautioned workers to refrain from consuming any spirit.
