Sharansky quits over Gaza Strip disengagement plan

Atul Aneja

Natan Sharansky

MANAMA: Israel's right-wing Cabinet Minister, Natan Sharansky, has resigned in protest against Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to withdraw from Gaza this year.

In his open resignation letter, Mr. Sharansky described the Gaza disengagement plan as "a tragic mistake" that would diminish the chances of forging genuine peace with the Palestinians. Mr. Sharansky has been a supporter of Jewish settlements on Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories and the Minister of Jerusalem and Diaspora Affairs.

His departure is unlikely to trouble the Government of Mr. Sharon, who has the cross-party support for his Gaza disengagement plan. Analysts, however, point out that Mr. Sharansky's exit could deepen the divide within Israeli society over ending settlements in Gaza and the withdrawal of troops from there.
