SINGAPORE: Wee Kim Wee , Singapore's beloved and versatile former President, passed away on Monday. He was 89. As the Head of State for two terms, from 1985 to 1993, Dr. Wee became known as the "People's President." During his second term, Singapore's Constitution was amended, providing for an elected President with expanded "custodial powers" including the protection of the reserves. Paying glowing tributes to him, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Dr. Wee, an obvious choice to run for election as President in 1993, declined, preferring the return to private life to write his memoirs. President S. R. Nathan, for whom Dr. Wee was mentor, friend and later colleague in the diplomatic corps, said the story of the late leader's life "is that of an obscure reporter who, in the face of many difficulties in his life, rose to the highest office of the land."
