Bangalore: Tamil Nadu's Ram S. Krishnan clinched the top spot in the maiden Garden City open International rating chess tournament, which concluded at the State Youth Centre here on Monday. Krishnan snuffed the challenge of overnight leader D.P. Singh of Jharkhand in the final round. Krishnan bagged the winner's trophy and also a cheque for Rs.50,000. IM Sudhakar settled for the second spot while Sriram Sarja, D.P. Singh and N. Sanjay finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively. A total of 50 prizes were awarded with total prize money of Rs.2.25 lakh.The standings: 1. Ram S. Krishnan (9), 2. Sudhakar Babu (8.5), 3. Sriram Sarja (8.5), 4. D.P. Singh (8.5); 5. N. Sanjay (8.5), 6. Roktim Bandopadhyay (8.5), 7. Rahul Shetty (8), 8. S.S. Soman (8); 9. Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury (8), 10. V. Saravanan (8). Other awardees: Best unrated: 1. Asim Pereira, 2. A. Niji, 3. Atish Das Sharma; Under-8: 1. Girish A. Koushik, 2. M. Priyadarshini; Under-10: 1. M. Vigram, 2. D.U. Anusha; Under-12: 1. G.A. Stany, 2. Akshata R. Bhat; Under-14: 1. M. Muthualagappan, 2. R. Aparna; Under-16: 1. Aswin Jayaram, 2. N. Veena; Best Karnataka player: V. Raghavendra; Best veteran players: 1. Sridhar Shetty, 2. R. Sridharan; Best woman player: K.E.R. Ranjitha.
