ALAPPUZHA: The Indian supremacy continued for the third day at the 17th Asian powerlifting championship at the Raiban auditorium here on Monday as the Indian lifters claimed 11 more gold medals to take their tally to 37. With the exception of S. Koteswar Rao, who created a new continental mark in deadlift in the 100-kg men's category, no other Indian even came close to the Asian records. Rao himself could manage only a silver behind Uzbekistan's Alan Djioev. Of the six other records set during the day, three of them were established by Kazakhstan's Alexey Ionin, who, despite the lack of competition in the sub-junior section of the men's 100-kg class, stole the spotlight. The 17-year-old Kazakh's effort of 245 erased the existing record of 242.5 in squat and he went on to break the current mark of 245 in deadlift too. Ionin, with 247.5 in deadlift, also broke the record for total (580) by finishing with 625. Ionin's teammate, Davranbek Turkhanov, took the 82.5-kg class gold in the senior section with a record to boot. Turkhanov eclipsed Dmitri Zaitsev's record of 310 in squat with an effort of 315 and went on to clinch the gold with 805 ahead of India's V. Raja. Ting Cheng Hsiung, winner of the sub-junior gold in the men's 75-kg division, came up with a record lift of 228 in squat in his fourth attempt, obliterating the mark set by Kazakhstan's Dmitri Magomadov (227.5). The other record-breaker of the day was the burly Iranian, Mehdi Ghorbanzadeh, who squatted with a weight of 360 to get past the current record in the 100-kg men's section by 2-kg.
