BELGAUM: Political parties here seem to be gearing up for the elections to the zilla and taluk panchayats. The Janata Dal (Secular), which organised a State-level "Grameena utsav" in Bangaore some time ago, has planned a district-level party workers' meeting to take stock of the situation and prepare workers to face the elections expected to be held in June. The Janata Dal (Secular) State unit Vice-President and Textiles Minister, Satish Jarkiholi, said on Monday that at least 30,000 workers from all taluks in the district will participate in the meeting at the C.P.Ed. Ground here on May 9. The party leaders such as the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, the Revenue Minister, M.P. Prakash, and the Panchayat Raj Minister, H.C. Mahadevappa, will address the workers, he said. Replying to a question, he said the Janata Dal (Secular) has a strong presence in Gokak, Athani, Saundatti, Chikkodi and Nipani taluks.
Emerging stronger
The district unit President, Ashok Pujar, said the party is emerging stronger. The bickering between the senior leaders of the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) will not have any impact on the party workers here. "Our workers are committed to the party. They will continue to work to strengthen the party,'' he added.
