Pension for Pingali: Centre's plea to State

HYDERABAD: The Centre has asked the State Government to locate eligible dependents of late Pingali Venkaiah and advise them to apply for the freedom fighter's pension, other benefits. This was stated by the Union Minister of State for Home, Manikrao H. Gavit, in a communication to the Telugu Desam MP, K. Rama Mohana Rao, in response to his demands raised in the House on March 24. - Staff Reporter

CPI(M) seeks lifting of ban on transfers

HYDERABAD: The CPI(M) has urged the Government to lift the ban on transfers in the Jails Department and complete the process of postings before new academic year. B.V. Raghavulu, secretary of the party, in a letter to the Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, said the transfer policy in the department was "unfair" and "unjust" as the entire State was being treated as a unit. He suggested that the local or zonal system of transfer be applied to the lower-level staff. - Staff Reporter

Probe into tribal's death on May 24

VIZIANAGARAM: An inquiry into the death of Thadangi Kassu, a tribal of Alagaruvu in Makkuva mandal, will be conducted at Makkuva MRO's office from 11 a.m. on May 24, according to the District Revenue Officer, U.C.G. Nageswara Rao. He asked eyewitnesses or the deceased's kin to depose before the inquiry officer on that day. - Correspondent

Decision on bail plea postponed

ANANTAPUR: The District and Sessions Court here reserved its decision on Monday on the bail petition moved by 11 persons of the 13 accused in the Paritala Ravindra murder case to Tuesday. Arguments on the petition were completed. The new judge, S. Chennaiah, who took charge on Monday heard the arguments. - Staff Reporter

YSR greets Balamurali for Chevaliar Award

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has greeted Carnatic maestro, Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna, for being conferred the prestigious Chevaliar Award (Knight of order of arts and letters) by the French Government. He said on Monday that the award was given in recognition of his distinguished services to the world of music. Dr. Reddy said Dr. Balamuralikrishna had brought glory to the country with his outstanding performances that enthralled music lovers. - Staff Reporter

Diarrhoea: one dies, 40 hospitalised

ELURU: One person reportedly died of suspected gastroenteritis and over 40 persons, mostly children, were hospitalised with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea in last two days in Kovvuru rural and Tadepalligudem mandals in West Godavari district. According to the DM&HO, V. Satyanarayana, the person was identified as Anantalakshmi of Rajakapet in Dommeru village.

She complained of diarrhoea and died on Monday in the primary health centre. The DM&HO said water samples from the affected villages had been collected for testing. House-to-house surveillance was undertaken and drugs were distributed in the villages as a precautionary measure. - Staff Reporter

Woman electrocuted

Kakinada: A housewife, Kola Rukma Bai (48), was electrocuted when she came in contact with a live electric wire by accident while working on a wet grinder in her house in Bandivari Street of Amalapuram on Monday. - Correspondent

SSC exam: hostel students do well

NELLORE: Students of Backward Classes and Scheduled Castes hostels in Nellore district fared well in the SSC examination.

While the former secured 81 per cent results, the inmates of SC hostels got 75 per cent results.

Fifteen BC hostels secured cent per cent passes.

Inmates of seven girls hostels maintained by the Social Welfare Department also got cent per cent results.

People warned against illegal tap connections

CHITTOOR: The Joint Collector and Special Officer Chittoor Municipality, Rajendra Prasad, has warned of action against persons having illegal tap connections.

He was speaking during the Praja Patham meeting in the 4th and 5th wards.

Drinking water scarcity in any area would be addressed within 24 hours if people brought it to his notice.

He said there was no dearth of funds for solving drinking water problem and warned erring officials of action.

The MLA, A.S. Manohar, was also present. - Correspondent

KURNOOL: A group of people resented the attempt of the municipal corporation to partially remove structures of a place of worship in One Town as part of road widening programme.

Stir threat by teachers

KURNOOL: The State general secretary of Government College Teachers Association, G. Venkat Reddy, has said they will intensify the agitation if the Government failed to implement the court verdict on promotions.

He told reporters here on Monday that out of 176 degree colleges in the State, 130 did not have regular principals because of inaction of the Government.

The association planned to stage protest in front of the residence of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, in June. - Staff Reporter

BC commission to visit Nizamabad

NIZAMABAD: The AP Backward Classes Commission headed by Justice Dalva Subramaniam will visit the district on May 12 to enquire whether the Muslim minorities could be included in the list of Backward Classes.

The Commission will interact with people on the issue at the ZP conference hall from 9 a.m to 1 p.m that day, according to an official release. - Staff Reporter

Report sought on hailstorm damage

WARANGAL: The district Collector, N Siva Sankar, has directed revenue officials to asses the damage to crops due to recent hailstorm and rain in the district and submit detailed reports in two days.

Damage to crops, collapse of houses and death of cattle were reported from some mandals across the district. The district administration has decided to seek finances from the State Government by submitting a comprehensive report. The farmers who dried their chilli and turmeric sustained heavy loss. - Staff Reporter

Three extremists arrested

KARIMNAGAR: The Jammikunta police arrested three militants belonging to the CPI-ML Praja Prathigatana naxalite group at Vavilala of Jammikunta mandal on Monday.

According to the police, the naxalite group secretary, Gandra Tirupathi Rao alias Prasad, along with dalam members and militants had thrashed the former TRS leader, P Sampath Rao, and another villager, K Jagadeshwar demanding party fund at Vavilala. Based on a complaint, the police registered a case and arrested the militants -- K Saraiah, R Tirupathi and A Sampath. - Staff Repoter
