SUMMER RELIEF: Summer showers have helped improve the storage in Thumbe vented dam.
MANGALORE: The threat of serious water scarcity in Mangalore seems to be abating, thanks to summer showers. The water-level at Thumbe Reservoir, which is the only water source for Mangalore, on Monday stood at 12.09 feet with a steady inflow of 70 to 75 cusecs a day, which means the reservoir has 42,000 million cubic meters of water impounded. According to the estimation of the Mangalore City Corporation, this is enough for 45 days even if water is supplied every day. The corporation has come back to daily water schedule from May 1 from the earlier one-in-three days schedule and according to the Chief Engineer of the corporation, Suresh Babu, the water crisis for this summer for Mangalore is over. The standby water tankers have been de-commissioned and returned to owners and only six of the 18 have been retained by the corporation to meet any emergency, Mr. Babu said. Thanking the people for their cooperation, the Mayor, Purandaradasa Kulur, said the corporation will cherish this situation for a long time to come. Encouraged by this, the corporation is now set to take up the construction of a vented dam for which it is awaiting government clearance. He said when completed, the vented dam can meet the water needs of the city up to 2026. The Torsteel Research Foundation of India (TRFI) has been given orders to conduct a survey for the vented dam and they have promised that the survey report will be with the corporation by the third week of May. According to the Engineering Department sources, it is still possible to start work this year before the onset of monsoon and if the foundation pillars can be erected quickly, work on the dam can be completed within a year, they added.
