Baha'i community honour for five

CHENNAI: : The Rose of Ridvan Service Awards 2005, instituted by the Baha'i community of Chennai, were on Sunday presented to five individuals to honour their altruistic services.

The awardees were V. Shanta, founder-director of Cancer Institute (health), C. Govindakrishnan, founder of Nethrodaya, an NGO working for the visually impaired (humanitarian service), R. Bhanumathi, founder-director, Pavai Centre for Puppetry (arts), Mini Krishnan, editor, Literary Translations, Oxford University Press (media/literature), and N. Parasuraman, founder, Dr. Ambedkar Free Night School for the poor (education).

This year, a Rolling Rose of Ridvan Service Shield was also instituted to honour an organisation that had rendered exemplary community service. The TN Forces, a network of child welfare agencies helping the tsunami affected, became the first organisation to etch its name on the shield.

K. Shanmugavelayuthan, convener of TN Forces, received the award on behalf of the organisation. M. Raja Ram, Director of Rural Development, was guest of honour on the occasion. Vijaya Ravishankar, member of the Baha'i Spiritual Assembly who presided over the function, lauded the altruistic spirit of the award-winners and noted that "service to humanity is the highest form of service to God."

A jazz piano recital by Madhav Chari, a puppet show by R. Bhanumathi and a dance concert by Narthanasala Dance School were the highlights of cultural show that followed.
