Will Azad's gesture bear fruit?

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Did some Opposition leaders happily bite the forbidden fruit on Monday morning?

Most could not resist as Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had very thoughtfully sent them boxes of the choicest peaches from his own garden.

"Wash them and eat them at the earliest," a polite note inside the box said.

Naturally, when they telephoned him to thank him for the tempting gift, Mr. Azad took the opportunity to ask them to attend the House for the passing of the Finance Bill.

Opposition sources said that about half-a-dozen senior National Democratic Alliance and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders received the gifts, including Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani, and the two deputy leaders, V.K. Malhotra and Sushma Swaraj.

Did the temptation work? Well, the NDA was back in the Lok Sabha on Monday to participate in the discussion and voting on the Finance Bill, and who knows, it may take a decision to lift its "boycott" of Parliament when it meets on Tuesday.
