Poor traffic sense, missing road divider add to chaos `Undivided' traffic woes

    HYDERABAD: It is one of the posh arterial roads in the city housing a variety of commercial establishments besides connecting the hi-tech city. And that explains the high volume of the traffic on the Banjara Hills (NFCL junction)-Jubilee Hills check-post road.

    But when it comes to traffic sense of motorists, it is as bad as one gets to see on any other road or stretch in the city, given the constraints of the 3.7-km stretch that has no road divider till KBR Park, strangely.

    No caution

    While the width of the road is not uniform because of the burial ground and encroachments, wrong location of malls, hotels and coffee shops that have come quite close to the NFCL intersection add up to the chaos.

    Instead of being cautious on the road sans divider, vehicle drivers zoom past unmindful of the interior roads opening onto the main road and making things difficult for those taking a right turn cutting through the free flowing traffic. "It is a peculiar situation. Those driving the best moving vehicles tend to express their personality through their accelerators and the slow moving mixed traffic adds to the risk," says the Additional Commissioner (Traffic), Tejdeep Kaur Menon.

    While road widening, providing a divider, redoing the alignment and removal of establishments in the wrong locations are a must, the situation also calls for better traffic and road sense by road users, she says.

    "The highest percentage of people using cell phones while driving at great speed is recorded on this road," she points out.

    As the road goes up, one sees the ribbon development of services and units attracting high intensive traffic.

    Such peripheral services and facilities which people use most should be along the service roads so that the main road would be free for traffic.

    Also there are some transformers and poles on the road, which had become the cause of several accidents that need to be relocated.

    Apart from the ongoing monitoring by the traffic police personnel, vehicles mounted with speed radar guns would be launched on the road as the stretch recorded the highest number of accidents -- 192 from 2003 to March 2005, Ms. Menon said.
