Koizumi visit

This refers to the recent visit to India of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi of Japan.

Apparently, Japan does not want the nuclear tests to come in the way of its relations with India.

Asha Krishnamurthy,
Bhadravathi, Karnataka

Mr. Koizumi's visit to India shows that the relations between the two countries have begun moving forward. They have realised that together they can play a key role in promoting prosperity and stability in Asia.

India has a major infrastructure problem that can be tackled to a great extent with Japanese cooperation. The agreement with Tokyo to build a Delhi-Mumbai and a Delhi-Howrah rail corridor can be a step in this direction.

K. Ambuja Ramesh,

It will not do for India to pursue the utopian line of a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council with veto power. As already pointed out, the veto is a negative power used to stall critical issues and settle political scores. Instead, India and Japan will do well to improve bilateral trade.

Yugal Joshi,
New Delhi
