Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial, `Taking the plunge from the brink' (May 3). The Congress should consider K. Karunakaran's departure from the party (to form a new one) good riddance and a blessing in disguise. Mr. Karunakaran had milked the Congress over the years for all its worth and had never hesitated to place the interests of his family over that of the party. Now that he is out, the Congress can do all it can to put an end to factionalism in the party and reach out to the people at the grassroots.
Mr. Karunakaran has only formed the National Congress (Indira) to promote the interests of his son, K. Muraleedharan, and not to pursue any ideological goal. However, in the process, it appears that he has left his daughter, Padmaja Venugopal, out in the cold. The only gainer in this drama seems to be the Left Democratic Front.
P. Ram Kumar,
If the Congress high command wants to enforce discipline among its cadres, stern action should be initiated against all those who attended the meeting called by Mr. Karunakaran. Unless such strong measures are initiated, such splits may be inevitable.
K. Murlidar,
Mr. Karunakaran's moves for a tie-up with the LDF indicate his lack of confidence that the outfit he heads is the `real Congress'. He should build up his new party without compromising on the political stand he had taken in his "vast years of public service." Does he have the courage?
