Kiefer packs off Haas

ROME: Sixth-seeded Andre Agassi, winner of the Rome title in 2002, defeated Italian wildcard Alessio di Mauro 7-5, 6-2 in the first round of the Italian Open here on Monday. German Nikolas Kiefer had an easy time when he cruised to a straight-set 6-3, 6-1 win over country-man Tommy Hass.

Fourth-seeded Tim Henman of Britain entered the second round, beating three-time French Open winner Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil 6-3, 6-3. Albert Costa, the 2002 French Open champion, and French qualifier Richard Gasquet also won their first round matches.

Santonja advances

In Morocco, seventh-seeded Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain reached the second round of the Grand Prix SAR when Severine Beltrame of France retired with a hip injury at sone-set all.

Beltrame won the first set 6-3 and Parra Santonja the second 6-4 when Beltrame quit with a left adductor strain.

Hantuchova ousted

At Berlin, Former world number five Daniela Hantuchova was bundled out of the Berlin Open on Tuesday, beaten 6-4, 6-4 by Argentine 20-year-old Gisela Dulko. The Slovakian, seeded 15, was put under pressure from the start against Dulko who proved the more consistent player throughout the contest.
