A homecoming for Akram

ONE OF THEIR OWN: Villagers giving an emotional welcome to Pakistan's former cricket captain Wasim Akram as he arrives at his ancestral home at Chawinda Devi, near Amritsar on Tuesday.

AMRITSAR: AMRITSAR: It was an emotional homecoming for Wasim Akram, the world's highest wicket-taker in one-day internationals to Chavinda Devi, a sleepy village in Amritsar district, today.

As Akram, accompanied by his father Chaudhary Mohammed Akram, reached the village, they were given a rousing welcome by the young and the old.

Mr. Chaudhary, who had spent his childhood here before migrating to Pakistan in 1947, became emotional as he stood in the courtyard of the house where he had grown up. Bhagwan Singh, the present occupant of the house, held him close and in chaste Punjabi said "this house still belongs to you."

The younger generation seemed more enthusiastic in getting a glimpse of the former Pakistan captain and they jostled with one another to get close to the star who politely acknowledged their greetings with a "sat shri akal." The lucky ones succeeded in getting the cricketer to pen a few lines in their notebooks. The youngsters were obviously proud of a star having his roots in their village. — UNI
