PONDICHERRY: The relay fast by the Federation of Unemployed Youth (degree and diploma holders) of Pondicherry State entered the 23rd day on Tuesday. The group urged the administration to make recruitments in government departments on seniority basis in the local Employment Exchange. A spokesman told The Hindu that the federation had as its constituents the Associations of Graduates and Diploma Holders of various disciplines such as auxiliary nurse midwifery, health assistants, pharmacists, teachers, technical teachers trainees, graduates in teachers training and pre-primary early child care and education and a few other courses in health sector. Although repeated representations were made to the Chief Minister and the Education department authorities here for recruiting candidates on seniority basis, nothing had happened. These youth were jobless for years together and most of them would go past the maximum age limit for appointment soon. Dismayed over the appointment of candidates on the basis of `merits' discarding their seniority, a section of fasting candidates said that nowhere in the country was such `unhelpful basis of appointment' conducted. Some candidates pointed out that the Tamil Nadu Government was adopting seniority as criterion for posting hands.
