MUMBAI: Uttar Pradesh XI defeated Western Railways 2-1 in the Bombay Gold Cup hockey semifinals first leg at the Mahindra stadium here on Tuesday. On Monday, U.P. XI entered the semfinal league with a 3-1 win over Lahore's Punjab XI 3-1. The finalists will be decided on aggregate after the second leg between these two teams. Indian Hockey Federation XI and Punjab & Sind Bank will compete for the other final berth. Western, enjoying home advantage and presence of in-form drag flicker Gursevak Singh in its ranks, forced seven penalty corners in an eventful second half but could not convert any. Gursevak had a hand in Shivender Singh's goal, the latter slotting home a free-hit but victory proved elusive. U.P. XI equalised in the first minute after breather with Sajid Khan's quick reflexes and timing proving decisive. His surging run in the 59th minute led to the second when he was brought down by Western custodian Surajkanta Singh while moving ahead after dispossessing Sunil Kumar. Mohd Kaleem converted the penalty stroke with a low shot to the right corner.
