HUBLI: The Carriage Repair Workshop of the South Western Railway has bagged an order to manufacture of 225 low platform container flat wagons from Container Corporation of India. Disclosing this at a press conference here on Tuesday, Rajiv Chandra, chief workshop manager, said that the contract value of the order is Rs. 38 crores. Infrastructure has been created at the workshop and the first proto type of the wagon will be ready by the end of May. The 225 wagons will be manufactured within one and a half years, he said. The workshop, which started wagon production from 2004, has an order for manufacture of 255 brake vans from the Railway Board. So far, 38 brake vans have been despatched and the workshop has made arrangements to manufacture 60 brake vans a year, he said. Regarding the proposal of setting up a Wagon Manufacturing Unit at the workshop, as was mooted by the Hassan MP and President of the Janata Dal (Secular) H.D. Deve Gowda during his tenure as the Prime Minister, Mr. Chandra said he did not know the details of the proposal. He maintained that there is sufficient staff at the workshop and that vacancies had been created owing to retirement of a few workers. He said that 100 workers will be recruited soon. He said that the workshop was in a compact place and there were no proposals to shift a few units to another location.
