MESCOM officials accused of negligence; relief given to boy's parents

SHIMOGA: Residents of Venkatesh Nagar here staged a protest on Tuesday on the Municipal Office premises against the alleged negligence of officials of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company that caused death of a boy.

The boy was reportedly electrocuted.

They brought the boy's body to the Municipal Office premises and sought compensation for the boy's parents.

It is said V. Dorai (15) died instantaneously after he came in contact with a live wire of a switchboard of a mini water supply scheme on 3rd Cross of Venkatesh Nagar on Monday when he went there to retrieve a cricket ball that had fallen in a drain.

The boy was electrocuted because of short circuit as water had entered the switchboard.

The residents complained that it was not the first time that such a case had been reported. Cattle that had come in contact with the switchboard were electrocuted on several occasions in the past, they said and added that repeated requests to the municipal officials to attend to the switchboard had gone in vain. It was said that short circuit was confirmed when the staff of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company conducted a test in the morning.

The boy's parents have lodged a complaint with the police.

The residents also demanded that the officials concerned be suspended. The Municipal Vice-President, Mallesh, and the Chairman of the Standing Committee, Satyanarayana, met the boy's parents and conveyed their condolences.

The Deputy Commissioner, T.K. Anil Kumar, who rushed to the spot, announced an ad hoc compensation of Rs. 10,000 and promised that he would recommend for higher compensation.

He also reportedly directed the municipal authorities to suspend the staff concerned.
