Hooch tragedy case: accused acquitted

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The Additional District and Sessions Court Judge at Kollam, C.P. Jayachandran, today acquitted the four accused in the Anchal hooch tragedy case in which six persons lost their lives. In his judgment, Mr. Jayachandran said that the Prosecution had failed to prove the charges against the accused persons.

Those acquitted are Chandrashekara Pillai (accused number 1), T.P. Raju (2), Roy Alexander (4) and Edamulakkal Sodharan (5). The third accused, Radhakrishna Pillai, died in the tragedy at Anchal during the Onam season in 1993. The verdict came almost 12 years after the tragedy. Trial on the case was completed before the court on May 25. The killer brew called `synchiburrys' was purchased and consumed by the victims from an Ayurveda pharmacy at Yeram, near Anchal. Over 160 persons who had purchased and consumed the same brew had been hospitalised, most of them at Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram.
